Cancun Weather

When planning a vacation in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or the Riviera Maya, it can be difficult to decide on dates. What will the weather be like? Will it rain? Will there be a hurricane? How hot will it be?

Unfortunately there are never any guarantees when it comes to the weather, but here is some information about the weather in Cancun to help you plan your next Mexico vacation.

Rain

The ancient Mayan civilization performed rituals for Chaac, the god of rain, thunder and lightning, to pray for rain so their crops would grow, but as far as we know they didn’t know how to stop it from raining. Although there is a "rainy season", it can rain anytime in Cancun, but rain in the forecast often means a passing shower, or it might rain in Cancun, but not in Playa del Carmen.

Temperature

Generally speaking, January is the coolest month and July is the hottest month in Cancun. Once in a while a cold front will come through, but most of the time it is always warm enough to go to the pool or beach. The humidity is generally higher June through October which makes it feel substantially warmer during those months.

Hurricanes

Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1st and ends November 30th, however most hurricanes occur August through October. The chances that a hurricane will hit during your vacation are very low. Cancun has only been hit by two major hurricanes: Gilbert on September 15, 1988 and Wilma on October 21, 2005, 17 years apart. The best precaution you can take in case of a hurricane is to purchase trip insurance.

Again, there are no guarantees when it comes to the weather, but you can consider this information when planning your Cancun vacation, and it can't hurt to keep your fingers crossed as well. If it does rain during your vacation, don't despair! There are lots of fun things to do on a rainy day in Cancún, Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya.
