Resorts, Hotels, Hostels: Where to stay in Cancun and the Riviera Maya

by Kristin Carleen Busse (Kristin)

When people think of Cancun, they usually think of a few things, Spring Break, white sand beaches, the turquoise blue Caribbean Sea, and all-inclusive resorts. Cancun is all these things, but it'’'s so much more. Yes, there are a lot of all-inclusive resorts, but there are a lot of other options as well. Here is some information that will help you decide where to stay in Cancun.

Resorts

There are a lot of all-inclusive resorts in the Cancun area. All-inclusive means that all of your meals, drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, snacks and activities are included in the price of your room. This is a really convenient way to take a vacation, as everything is provided so you don't have to worry about anything. Most resorts have nightly entertainment, a kids club, and bars or a nightclub, or both. There are many all-inclusive resorts in Cancun’s Hotel Zone and in the area to the south called the Riviera Maya.

Hotels

Hotels can also be resorts, but in general a hotel does not offer an all-inclusive option, or at least they give you a choice between staying all-inclusive or EP (European plan), which means that no meals or possibly just breakfast are included in the price of your room. The advantage of staying on a European plan is that it gives you the opportunity to try different restaurants and nightlife in the area, and Cancun's Hotel Zone is packed with great eateries and nightclubs. There are hotels located both in the Hotel Zone and in downtown Cancun.

Condos

Many people don't realize that there are a lot of condominiums available for rent in Cancun, both in the Hotel Zone and downtown. Staying in a condominium, especially in downtown Cancun can be very economical and lets you experience Cancun like a local. You can purchase groceries and cook. There are now two large grocery stores in the Hotel Zone; Chedraui Select, next to the Convention Center and Soriana in Plaza Kukulcan.

Hostels

Staying in a hostel is the most economical way to visit Cancun. However staying in a hostel means giving up some luxuries and privacy. There are various hostels in downtown Cancun and one in the Hotel Zone. Some offer meals that are included in the price of your stay. Most hostels offer lockers where you can keep your personal belongings under lock and key. Staying in a hostel is a way to meet other travelers from all over the world.
